Brain Rules Rules

brainrules 300x300 Brain Rules RulesAbout a month ago, I finished the fantastic book by John Medina called Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School Brain Rules Rules.

However, in the midst of grading papers for the end of term and planning our upcoming move, I forgot to post a review of it on this site. Having read Brain Rules, I can tell you that this was a failure of my short term memory, and the fact that I did not “remember to repeat.”

This book, however, is what YTP is all about. It is a gem. I found the research and insights into behavioral neuroscience fascinating, and have taken the twelve “brain rules” to heart as much as I can. It is one thing to hear how important sleep and exercise are to your brain. It is another thing entirely to explore the science of it as the cellular level and below.

What I did not expect from this book was to have it help my teaching. Medina is a good writer, but he is clearly an even better lecturer, primarily because he applies what he knows abotu the way the brain works to his lectures – both written and oral. I found the teaching applications of brain rules to be extremely helpful and informative, and they certainly gave me that extra level of motivation I needed to take my writen lectures to a higher level in the hopes of keeping that information in my students’ heads for a little longer.

But even if you are not a neuroscience geek, a student, or a professor, this book is a great walk through the mysterious and fascinating world of, well, of your mind. Could anything be more interesting to you than that? icon smile Brain Rules Rules
